World of Warcraft in English

World of Warcraft (abbreviated WoW) is a video gametypeMMORPG(massively multiplayer online role-playing game) developed by the company Blizzard Entertainment. This is the4 th  game of the universe medieval fantasy Warcraft introduced by Warcraft: Orcs and Humans in1994. World of Warcraft takes place in Azeroth, almost four years after the events of the end of the previous game, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne 1 Blizzard Entertainment announcesWorld of Warcraft on September 2, 2001.

The first expansion of the game, The Burning Crusade, was released in January 2007. The second extension, Wrath of the Lich King, was released in November 2008. The third, Cataclysm, was released in December 2010. The fourth expansion, Mists of Pandaria, was released in September 2012. The fifth expansion, Warlords of Draenor, was released November 13, 2014. The sixth extension, Legion, was released on August 30, 2016.

Since its release, World of Warcraft is the most popular MMORPG. The game holds the Guinness World Record for the biggest popularity for a MMORPG. In April 2008, World of Warcraft was estimated to bring together 62% of MMORPG players. TheBlizzard announced that more than 12 million players have an account World of Warcraft active. It is from late 2012 that World of Warcraft will begin to continually lose a growing number of players. In the last quarter of 2012, Blizzard announced the number of 9.6 million subscribers worldwide and 7.7 million for the 2th  quarter 2013.

World of Warcraft celebrated its 10th  anniversary in November 2014. The following month, following the release of the expansion Warlords of Draenor, Blizzard announced that World of Warcraft passes the milestone of 10 million subscribers.

Gameplay

Overview

The game resumes its place in the imaginary world of Azeroth , whose historical setting is four years after the events concluding Warcraft  III . The player chooses his character from eight, ten or twelve Note 4 and then 13 available races divided into two factions: the Alliance and the Horde . Thus, if the Alliance allows to incarnate a Human , a Dwarf , a Gnome or an Elf of the Night , Horde side it will be an Orc , a Troll , a Tauren (a kind of minotaur ) or a Undead .

With the arrival of the first expansion of the game in January 2007 , named The Burning Crusade , each faction now has a new breed: Blood Elves for the Horde and Draenei for the Alliance. Two races are added in the Cataclysm extension , the Goblins in the Horde and the Worgen (kinds of werewolves) in the Alliance, and finally, since the Mist of Pandaria expansion, the Pandarens are implanted as a neutral race Freely choosing his affiliation Alliance or Horde.

In addition to selecting the character’s race and appearance, customization includes choosing one of the following nine: Warrior , Mage, Rogue, Priest, Hunter , Druid , Warlock, Paladin, and Shaman . A 10 th  class, called heroic class is added with the expansion Wrath of the Lich King  : the death knight. A 11 th  class is added since the release of the expansion Mists of Pandaria: the Monk and 12 th  class will then be added with the expansion Legion  : Demon Hunter.

Players are also encouraged to develop their skills in various trades (2 trades main Note 5 up and 3 or 4 trades Note 6 secondary also called skills). Leatherworking, engineering, carving, mining, forging, herbalism, alchemy, enchantment, jewelery, calligraphy and sewing are all now considered major occupations. The secondary trades are first aid, fishing, cooking and archeology.

World of Warcraft is part of the Warcraft universe, where you can find some heroes of the saga, such as Arthas Menethil , Archimonde , Thrall or even Illidan Stormrage .

The game, characteristic of other Blizzard licenses, synthesizes most of the ideas of the genre without bringing real innovations but perfecting the current elements and balancing them to the maximum. To do this, Blizzard has created localization teams in the countries where the game is distributed so that they can translate the game in a complete way (in some cases, only the record) and constantly update and changes. Blizzard has also made it possible for its game to have above average accessibility and can be used on most computers up to five years of age.

World of Warcraft also distinguishes itself from other MMORPGs by the concern of the developers not to tire the casual players by a system of aid to the acquisition of levels: [ ref.  desired]

  • A casual player, or ”  casual,  ” will be able to have a “bonus” allowing him to gain twice as much experience by killing monsters. The more the avatar stays at the hostel (or in a capital), the more it will feel “rested” and will benefit from this bonus;
  • Many quests can be done alone;
  • There is also a random dungeon tool that allows you to find a dungeon group in 5-10 minutes, which allows you to gain a lot of experience in a short time (20 minutes maximum) and the gain of experience is even greater if one is ” rests “.

The Quests

The general principle is to perform quests that are scripted variations of “kill X monsters”, “bring Y objects”, “go meet or talk to Z” (there are some exceptions). Killing monsters and making quests brings experience (to the maximum level, quests only report money and reputation). After a certain number of experience points gained, the player gains a level and its characteristics increase, as well as its power and its points of life. Besides the experience, the quests also reward the player with equipment, reputation and money.

Daily quests (often linked to events such as the Darkmoon fair or the various organized parties IG). These are recurring quests, identical each time: each player can repeat them indefinitely, with the double limit that each one can only be performed once a day. They usually bring money and allow To increase the players’ reputation among the various factions. There are currently 313 different daily quests for the Alliance and about 320 for the Horde 13 . Some daily quests are related to crafts: daily fishing quests, cooking … In this case, rewards are cooking recipes or items available only through this.

The quests are incorporated into the game, the masters of the game can not add them, but they can regulate the reset and the timing of the accessibility of the quests. Quests are added via patches issued by the game’s creative company. There are no main quests in World of Warcraft , unlike other games like Slayer Online or Guild Wars . There are a multitude of small quests that succeed each other in order to raise the level of several players at the same time, these quests gradually deliver a precise scenario on each parcel of the world of Azeroth, Outland and Draenor . A multitude of scenarios intersect, therefore, there is not a single main frame, Unlike single player RPGs such as Final Fantasy , The Elder Scroll or Warcraft III . There is therefore no “end of the game” strictly speaking.

Characters

World of Warcraft characters are attached to user accounts and can only be used on the realm (the name of the servers) where they were created. Nevertheless, Blizzard sometimes allows the migration of characters from one kingdom to another, in order to unblock a realm close to saturation or to fill a void. It is also possible to migrate his character from one kingdom to another with the paying character transfer for the price of twenty euros. Users can create up to 12 characters per kingdom and 50 characters in total that span a variety of races and classes. The two factions currently in play are the Alliance and the Horde ,

Character types

It is necessary to differentiate player characters (PJ) from non-player characters (NPCs). The player characters are the avatars of the players. The color of the name of a PC may vary (blue, green, yellow, or red) depending on the faction, location, and combat status of the PC. NPCs are characters that can only interact with player characters through scripts or artificial intelligence (AI). Blizzard picked up some famous names to attribute them to his NPCs: a few examples, the sculptor Calder, Hodir’s sons blacksmith, Harrison Jones, a mixture of Harrison Ford and Indiana Jones, with whom the player will chain a series of Quests to Uldum, his enemy Belloc, the French archaeologist, also gives some quests …

Friendly NPCs (whose names are displayed in green) are distinguished from hostile NPCs (mainly NPCs from the opposing faction and monsters) whose names are in red. There are also neutral NPCs with a yellow name. NPCs in capitals and cities can sell and buy goods, train the character according to his class and professions, give him quests, link him to the auction house (players sell their items at auction), and Provide him with all the services that are needed in the game. Some will simply offer advice or some history, while others will defend the city against possible invaders.

Races and classes

Main article: Races of Warcraft.

The characters created by the players are represented by avatars in the online world of Azeroth. When creating a character in World of Warcraft, the player can choose from twelve different races and ten character classes. The races are divided equally among the two factions, the Alliance, and the Horde.

  • The Alliance is made up of Humans, Night Elves , Dwarves , Gnomes , Draenei and Worgens .
  • Horde consists of Orc, the Undeads, of Taurens, the Troll, of Blood Elf and Gobelin.
  • There is a new breed (since Wow Mists of Pandaria) called “Pandarens”, and this breed can choose between the two factions that it will join.
  • In addition, there are many NPC races, such as Ogres, Murlocs, Nagas, Centaurs …

Basically, the nine available classes are Shaman, Hunter, Warlock, Druid, Warrior, Mage, Paladin, Priest and Thief. The classes available to create his character depend on the breed chosen. Twenty-six combinations of classes and races are possible for each faction, for a total of fifty-two combinations 14 in World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade . Before the release of the first extension, there could be paladins only in the Alliance and shaman only in the Horde.

The tenth class, Knight of Death, has been made available from the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, bringing the number of combinations of classes and races possible for each faction to thirty-six. It is commonly referred to by the initials DK (abbreviation for English Death Knight ). The latter is available only if the player already has a level 55 character. Thus, he can create another Death Knight character who will already be level 55.

The expansion Cataclysm has added two playable races (Worgen and Goblins) and a large number of additional combinations.

The following extension, Mists of Pandaria introduces a new breed: the Pandarens as well as a new class, the Monk. In the case of this new breed only, the player may choose to integrate any of the two factions according to his choice.

Legion , the latest expansion, raises the Demon Hunter class available only for night elves and blood elves .

Character classes [ edit | Change the code ]

The character class determines the playing possibilities, in terms of available spells, types of attacks that can be used in combat. Each class has strengths and weaknesses, and synergies between classes encourage players to compose groups of different classes. At level 15 , the player is asked to choose a new technique / spell / attack from among three available in the talents tab. These do not affect the depth of classroom functioning, as was the case with previous extensions (before Mists of Pandaria, using specialty talent trees). It is primarily utilities that the player can choose to modify between each fight for a very small sum, Optimize the character according to the strategy to be adapted and according to the type of combat. In total, six talents are available at the same time (unlocked at levels 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90 and 100). Each class has three specializations (four for the druid class), which fully determine the gameplay and function of the player (tank, heal, dps distance or melee).

Blizzard provides players with the necessary qualifications (eg having a character of a certain level, and possibly having completed specific quests), heroic classes. These are different from other character classes: do not start a character again from the first level. The first heroic class is available to players once the World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King expansion is installed. The use of this class requires at least a character at level 55, but initiates the adventure at this level, in a specific area, common to the death knights of each race of both factions.

Professions

In addition to classes, a player may choose two primary professions and the four secondary professions.

Essentially, there are two types of primary occupations  : production and resource collection. Many players choose two related professions, allowing the character to collect the materials needed for the production profession. The most recommended configurations are: Mining and Forging, Mining and Engineering, Skinning and Leatherworking, Herbalism and Alchemy, and to a lesser degree, Herbalism and Enchantment, Sewing and Enchanting, Skinning and Sewing; since the release of Burning Crusade , Mining & Jewelry and since the release of Wrath of the Lich King , Herbalism and Calligraphy Note 9 . In general, these combinations of professions are more useful to certain classes than to others;

In addition, World of Warcraft offers secondary skills (fishing, archeology, first aid, cooking), allowing players to harvest resources and transform them for sale or use / consumption. Also, it is possible to treat another player using the ”  first aid  ” skill, but this is not enough to be a dungeon.

Archeology was added to the secondary professions, with the release of the Cataclysm extension .

Features

Characteristics are used by the game to calculate the strengths and weaknesses of each character.

Some of the characteristics are already present, based on the level, the class and the race of the character; But to be stronger it is necessary to equip itself with objects (pieces of armor and other jewels) that provide supplements to the characteristics.

Objects and equipment

There are various types of objects in World of Warcraft , ranging from axes and swords to simple flowers and animal organs. Objects can usually be sold more or less expensive to merchants or auction. The more scarce (or sought-after, the auction items), the more expensive they will be.

Over time, players who have reached the maximum level naturally seek to improve their equipment. This task, which may seem simple to some, can nevertheless prove to be very long and difficult for others. The lure of winning and wanting to perfect his equipment can prove addictive and taking to the limit to make the player dependent. World of Warcraft does not really end and it takes dozens of hours of game to reach the maximum level 60 initially , 70 with The Burning Cruises , 80 with Wrath Of The Lich King , 85 with Cataclysm , 90 with Mysts Of Pandaria , 100 with Warlords of Draenor , and more hours to equip as he pleases.

World of Warcraft also gives players the opportunity to compete against each other (Fighting Player vs. Player or PvP) or by attacking an enemy territory or city that can be defended by members Of the opposing faction, or through the intermediary of the battlefields. This is instanced areas whose gameplay takes those mods the most popular shooters in the first person (capture the flag, conquest …).

Thus, it is possible to acquire equipment and experience by fighting other players in combat zones, confronting creatures with a group in a magical universe or simply by doing business A system of auctions of objects created or found by players).

The pieces are worn by a character

A character can carry up to sixteen pieces of equipment, covering the different parts of his body. Of these, nine bring bonuses. They cover the head, shoulders, back, torso, wrists, hands, waist, legs and feet. The character also wears a collar and two rings. He also wears two jewels. The last two pieces of equipment do not bring any bonus: the shirt and the tabard. The latter allows you to represent your guild or the fact of having made a quest, having participated in an Event or other. In Northrend, tabards also allow in group dungeons to increase the character’s reputation with the faction that sold him the tabard by killing monsters that bring him experience.

Most high-level pieces of equipment can be enhanced by enchantment scrolls and/or gems or jewels.

Armor

There are different types of armor in the game, which are not portable by all classes. Mages, priests, and warlocks are limited to the weave of the cloth. Hunters, shamans, monks, druids and thieves are limited to leather and cloth weave. However, hunters and shamans may wear armor from level 40. Warriors, paladins, and death knights can equip themselves with any type of armor from level 40 onwards. Armor is used to reduce the damage suffered from melee attacks. The fabric provides the lowest protection and the largest plates.

The equipment provides bonuses to the attributes of a character. An equipment can have its name written in green, blue, purple or even orange. This color determines the quality of the object and its rarity.

Linking an object to a character

Most unusual, rare, epic and legendary objects, as well as some usual objects, are linked to their wearer once equipped, or in their inventory. As soon as an object is bound, it can no longer be exchanged, given, but can still be sold to a merchant. However, objects can be destroyed at any time, just throw them away. There are three types of linked objects:

  • Those linked when they are equipped (the player can exchange it or sell it at auction until it is equipped). All unusual objects, whether obtained in instances or created by a profession, are, as well as some rare or epic objects obtained on monsters of the keep or raid. They form the majority of the related objects of the game, apart from the objects of quests;
  • Those linked when they are picked up (once in the character’s inventory, the object is bound Note 11 ). This is the case for almost all quest items, quest rewards, and boss booty. They form the majority of coveted objects of the game;
  • And those linked to the account, which is mostly referred to as “inheritance” objects, a mechanism added well after the game is released. They can be mailed to any character in the same account On the same server and in the same faction. The objects of inheritance have their name of a yellow color and have the characteristic to evolve at the same time as the personage. One can thus equip one from level 1 and keep it up to level 90 , without suffering a drop in performance, since the object in question is superior to practically all the other objects, epic objects (very rare ) And legendary excepted. For a handful of gold coins, inheritance objects can reach the 100 level.

The team game

In the current extension , Raids have between 10 and 40 players. The difficulty varies according to the number of players for the difficulties “Normal” and “Heroic”. The “Mythic” maximum difficulty level is only available to 20 players, and its difficulty will be similar to that of the “Heroic” mode until the end of the Mists of Pandaria expansion.

The instances

World of Warcraft includes many dungeons, also called instances (because the dungeon worldis instantiated on a specific server for group members). They are regularly added to the game through updates or extensions. The goal for the group of players is to browse a map populated by computer-controlled enemies, in order to reach the various bosses present in the dungeon. In the event of successful rewards, called loots , can be recovered on the boss and shared between the players. According to the dungeons, various strategies can be put in place to defeat opponents proposed by the game. A high-score system allows you to accumulate points if certain conditions are met during combat (making it considerably more complicated). Since Cataclysm, the third expansion of World of Warcraft, a codex is available. This contains information about the instance, the bosses, their spells, strategies, and related stories.

In World of Warcraft, there are two main types of dungeons: five-player dungeons and raids. The main difference is the number of players involved. Indeed, raids can mobilize between 10 and 40 players depending on the chosen instance. However, if 40-player raids were frequent at the World of Warcraft release, Blizzard modified the mechanics of the game to limit new releases to a maximum of 25 players in order to facilitate the formation of groups and the smooth running of the exit ( In particular when the recovered loot is allocated).

The dungeons

For a dungeon, the group is composed of five players maximum generally as follows: a player with a specialized class in the collection of damage (the tank), a healer (the healer or healer ) and three specialized players In damage (DPS, for damage (or damage) per second). However, it is entirely feasible to complete a dungeon with a smaller group, or even alone. This is particularly the case when a high-level player returns to a low-level dungeon. The power gap allows the player to complete the dungeon very quickly without any noticeable difficulty. This case is frequent when the player wishes to recover a dungeon – specific object (called “loot”), or when he makes the dungeon,

The amount of time spent in a dungeon varies according to the challenges proposed (number of bosses to be killed, tasks to be done, length of the card, a number of enemies proposed) and the dexterity and equipment of the group Acronym: “Skuff”: Skill: Skill + Stuff: Equipment). However, Blizzard has made it possible to lighten the durations of the dungeons over the extensions. If the first trips could last a few hours at the beginning of World of Warcraft, now some instances can be completed much more quickly ( sometimes within an hour or 25 minutes usually for heroic dungeons 5 players ).

There is a dungeon mode called “Challenge Mode”. In this mode, the difficulty is even more important than in heroic mode and there is no loot on the bosses. The goal is to accomplish a number of goals in the dungeon (usually kill all bosses and a set amount of “trash mobs”) within an allotted time that is timed since the dungeon was launched. There are 4 levels of achievement, from simply accomplishing the goals to bronze, silver and gold achievements. The “meta highs” associated with the successes of his dungeons in challenge mode allow unblocking for the character rewards such assets of transmogrification (change of appearance of different pieces of armor), frames and titles.

Since the Legion extension, the ” Challenge ” mode has been replaced by the “Mythical +” mode. If the mythical version of the dungeons has existed since Warlords of Draenor as a more difficult variant of the heroic mode, the “Mythical +” mode is distinguished by its ability to adapt its difficulty (also called scalability) according to the progression Of the player. Thus, a more experienced player will be able to face more powerful enemies and thus hope to obtain better equipment. Finally, in order for the system not to become too repetitive, developers have added several affixes in order to make the mode more interesting mechanically speaking.

The raids

If the dungeons are an interesting challenge for the players, the real difficulty lies in the raids, which are more difficult to complete. According to the raids proposed by the game, a group can be composed of 10, 20, 25 or even 40 players. However, the number of players involved is not necessarily related to the difficulty of the raid. Indeed, Blizzard has opted for a limitation of the number of players per raid, in order to facilitate the constitution of the raid, the allocation of the booty and to avoid too heavy load for the servers and the computers of the players.

As for dungeons, raid players must implement strategies to defeat the proposed bosses. The quality of the booty is obviously superior to the items present in the dungeons. Since the release of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, the raids are in 10 and 25 player mode. Each of these modes is available in two levels of difficulty: normal and heroic. In order to unlock the heroic level, it is generally necessary to fulfill at least one condition, such as the presence of a player in the raid who has already finished the same raid in normal mode or having a particular object, such as a key to unlock the access (The key is usually obtained by making a quest, killing another boss or fulfilling reputation conditions).

The scenarios

Since the release of the World of Warcraft expansion, Mists of Pandaria, a new type of instance is present: the scenarios. Playable in three, the scenarios represent no big challenge but allow to play and to be involved in the historical events of the story (like the first scenario, “the fall of Theramore”). Scenarios offer rare but interesting rewards.

The arenas

It is in these arenas that players can compete with each other, one of the aspects of the Player-to-Player (PvP) mode. The players can form teams in order to play in 2 against 2, 3 against 3 or 5 against 5. The performance of the teams and the players is judged by several criteria: The personal rating that is specific to the character and with which it is possible To unlock certain pieces of equipment. The team score which varies according to the matches won or lost, and which determines every Wednesday the number of arena points that will be distributed. The so-called hidden harmonization rating or mmr which is equivalent to the real value of the game, team,

There are a number of arenas with different sets and strategies to adopt:

  • Arena of Nagrand
  • Arena of Edgewinds
  • Ruins of Lordaeron
  • Sewers of Dalaran
  • Tol’viron Arena

At the end of each season, titles rewarding the best players are awarded:

  1. Personalized Gladiator: top 0.1%
  2. Gladiator  : top 0.5%
  3. Duelist  : 0.5% → 2%
  4. Rival  : 2% → 10%
  5. Competitor  : 10% → 35%

The guilds

A guild is an association of players whose aim is to organize one or more activities in common, in particular through a private chat channel and the presence of a guild calendar. In World of Warcraft, a member of a guild is recognizable by entering the name of his guild (mandatory) and/or the tabard that the character is wearing on his torso (optional) under his pseudonym. Any type of guild can be created, but the most important ones usually have a primary goal (PVE HL Player Vs Environment High Level, PVP Player Vs Player or other) defined in a guild charter. Secondary goals (such as mutual assistance between members) can also be identified. This charter also defines rules of conduct (towards guild members and other players) and sometimes a sanctioning schedule for violations. This charter is often published on the internet (in a guild forum) and must be explicitly accepted by members and applicants. A guild is also often a community of players sharing certain values or interests. Many guilds organize IRL ( In Real Life ) events to promote group cohesion and to share activities outside of the game. But being in a guild does not mean having only homework. Members also have rights, on loots , wealth or places in activities. A guild bank is created, where interesting items are stored,

To create an IG ( In Game ) guild, a player must meet a number of criteria. First of all, it must obviously not belong to any structure already in place. Then he must advance a certain virtual sum to the NPC in charge of guild creation. Finally, he must collect 5 (since Cataclysm patch) signatures of unguided players. Once all of these conditions are met, the player will automatically become the guild master of this new community, while non-guild players who have agreed to sign the guild charter will be simple members.

If a guild needs 5 members to see the light of day, it is not uncommon for some communities to have several hundred players or guilds where there is only one player. It is also possible to add alternative characters, in addition to his main character, in the guild. The guild master is the guild’s main authority. However, it can assign a number of privileges and delegate certain tasks to a few members of the guild. These players are then called officers and have the mission to support the guild master, in particular by ensuring the smooth running of the community when the guild master is disconnected.

In World of Warcraft , one of the reasons for being a guild is planning raids. Indeed, if it is possible to form a raid with players from different guilds – or with non-guided players – players often prefer to associate with people they regularly attend, Members of the same guild are more tolerant of each other and learn how to play each other. This community of purpose generally allows to obtain a better efficiency and reach the goal more quickly. [ Ref.  desired]

Conversely, players can be punctually taken to complete the required strength for a dungeon or raid (called ”  pick-ups or PU”).

If some guilds recruit players on the fly, others require an application. This is particularly the case for guilds exclusively oriented towards raids, with conditions more or less difficult to fulfill. Usually, the criteria revolve around player’s game time constraints, its regularity, punctuality, age, experience raids “High Level” (HL, High Level ), its ability to invest For the community of player of its guild, of its progression in the equipment of its personages.

The Cataclysm extension has brought a more certain to the functioning of a guild, creating a guild progression and guild-specific highs. This progression is limited to 25 levels, each level unlocked offering an additional advantage reserved for members of the guild. This new feature also allows members to become more loyal to their guild, as members can get additional items that are inaccessible by other means by increasing their reputation with their guild.

Afterward, the guild level was removed but some benefits (such as the Guild Chest invocation) became innate for all guilds

Economic model and related facts

World of Warcraft has about 10 million players subscribers, each paying between 11 and 13 € per month .Since 2011 Blizzard can play World of Warcraft free up to level 20 . Blizzard has also put on sale a whole series of derivative products, taken from the universe of the game: comic books, board games, figurines, mugs, card games … New extensions and updates also make it possible to relaunch regularly Interest (see the paragraph on extensions ). Blizzard’s competing companies are trying to capture a share of this buoyant market through similar MMORPGs (eg Dungeons and Dragons Online:

The virtual riches in World of Warcraft are causing drifts like buying for real money from whole accounts in order to get one or more items on that account. This practice is due to the fact that the objects in question are sometimes linked to the account and therefore not exchangeable against virtual riches. It has seen, on one of the official servers of World of Warcraft , on behalf of a warrior with the Sword of war right Azzinoth sell $ 9 500 19 . Account purchases can also be made when a person does not want to progress in the game and directly have a character at the maximum level. It has nevertheless become possible, since the release of the Legion extension,

The popularity of World of Warcraft and the difficulty for players to obtain certain wealth have led to the appearance of farmers. The farmers are players who collect all that is marketable in the game: items, craft items, etc., but sometimes are by pirates who fraudulently introduce into the account of other players, and sell everything that player has to divert the gold ball to one of their own figures in order to exchange it against real money.

The use of these commercial sites is prohibited by Blizzard and very badly seen by the vast majority of players.

Since the 6.1.2.19793 update, it is possible for players to exchange their virtual money for WoW tokens. The latter can then be spent against extra time in the game. The WoW token can not be stored more than 10 times and its price varies depending on supply and demand. It is also possible to buy chips with real money and resell them for virtual money.

Dependency on the game

The success of World of Warcraft , its openness to the general public and its gaming system that rewards players for their investment in game time, has resulted in many players becoming addicted . However, this policy has gradually evolved since the beginning of World of Warcraft , at a level where from now on, even the most casual players can have a character almost as powerful as players who spend a lot of time there. There is also a parental control system to regulate consumption by letting the child play for only a certain time each day, but the impact of this system is limited to young people whose legal guardians take the trouble to set it up.

On the other hand, the Chinese government has taken restrictive measures to limit the number of daily hours per subscription, this measure applies only to players connected from its territory.

The phenomenon of addiction comes from the fact that the player must constantly update his equipment if he wants to make his character more powerful, a necessity if he does not want to be a weight for his guild. This sense of belonging and duty to the guild is the culmination of addiction, as the player is obliged to connect with his or her guild members if they wish to participate in their activities (often in the evening). Raid type activities are the most addictive because the player has a specific role within his group, he is often indispensable and irreplaceable for his guild, which adds extra weight on his shoulders. In addition, raids often last more than 3 hours.

Before the release of the extension “The Burning Crusade ” , the player who did not want to see his character lose his acquired was almost forced to connect at least as long each day. Some players did not hesitate to spend daily more than 10 hours , thus abandoning their education or employment .

As a safety measure in , The main cooperative of Norwegian cooperatives “Coop Norge”, decided not to sell the game because it was the favorite of Anders Behring Breivik , the author of a double murderous attack on.
